TVXQ (often stylized TVXQ!or TVfXQ an acronym for Tong Vfang Xien Qi(東方神起) is a South Korean quintet boy band formed under SM Entertainment in 2003. In South Korea they are known as Dong Bang Shin Gi they were later introduced in Japan asTohoshinki (東方神起 Tōhōshinki?) under the Avex sub-label Rhythm Zone in 2005. Their name translates as "The Rising Gods of the East". n 2008, with the release of their sixteenth Japanese single, "Purple Line", which debuted atop the Oricon single chart, TVXQ became the fifth non-Japanese Asian artist and the first male foreign group to have a number-one single on the chart. With their twenty-third single, "Dōshite Kimi o Suki ni Natte Shimattandarō?", TVXQ set a new record, becoming the first foreign artist to have three singles debut atop the chart. In 2010, with the release of their thirtieth single, "Toki o Tomete", TVXQ extended their record, making them the first foreign artist to have eight number-one singles on the Oricon.

History

2003–2005: Debut

Before their debut, the group was offered three tentative names: O Jang Yukbu (오장육부 lit. The Five Visceras), Jeonseoleul Meokgo Saneun Gorae (전설을 먹고 사는 고래 lit. A Whale That Eats Legends), and Dong Bang Bul Pae (동방불패, the Korean title of Ashes of Time). They decided on Dong Bang Bul Pae; however, the name was rejected because the Hanjawas not aesthetically pleasing, and the name was changed to Dong Bang Shin Gi, which was named by Lee Soo Man's acquaintance.
In April 2005, TVXQ debuted in Japan under the Avex sub-label Rhythm Zone with the single "Stay with Me Tonight".hey released their second Japanese single, "Somebody to Love", before returning to Korea and releasing their second Korean album Rising Sun. Rising Sundebuted atop the charts and became the fourth best-selling-record of 2005 with a total of 222,472 copies sold.[16] TVXQ ended the year with two releases: their third Japanese single, "My Destiny", and a Korean single with label-mate Super Junior, "Show Me Your Love". The latter debuted atop the charts and sold 49,945 copies, making it the thirty-fifth best-selling record of the year.At the end of the year, TVXQ received the Best Music Video award for the song "Rising Sun" and the People's Choice Award at the 2005 Mnet KM Music Video festival.

2006–2007: Foray into Asia

TVXQ began 2006 with their first international tour, Rising Sun 1st Asia Tour. In addition to South Korea, they toured in China, Thailand, and Malaysia, making them the first Korean performers to hold a concert in Malaysia.[3] In March, the group released their fourth Japanese single, "Asu wa Kuru Kara" (明日は来るから lit. Because Tomorrow Will Come?), and their debut Japanese album, Heart, Mind and Soul. The album debuted on the weekly Oricon album chart at #25 with 9,554 copies sold. Their fifth Japanese single, "Rising Sun/Heart, Mind and Soul", released a month later, debuted on the Oricon singles chart at #22.[20] To support the album, TVXQ held their first Japanese tour, 1st Live Tour 2006: Heart, Mind and Soul, from May to June. TVXQ released two more Japanese singles, "Begin" and "Sky". The latter debuted at #6, making it the group's first single to reach the Top Ten. In the summer, TVXQ performed in Avex's annual A-Nation summer concert.
TVXQ began 2007 with a new Japanese single, "Step By Step", which was followed by their second Asian tour, The 2nd Asia Tour Concert 'O'. The tour took place in Seoul, Taipei, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai and Beijing. In March, the group released their tenth Japanese single, "Choosey Lover", and their second Japanese album, Five in the Black. Both debuted in the Top 10 of their respective charts, the former at #9 and the latter at #10. In May, the group attended the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards Japan and won the "Best Buzz Asia in Korea" award for their album "O"-Jung.Ban.Hap. From June to December 2007, the group released a string of five singles: "Lovin' You", "Summer: Summer Dream/Song for You/Love in the Ice", "Shine / Ride On", "Forever Love" and "Together". "Summer: Summer Dream/Song for You/Love in the Ice" reached #2 on the Oricon, making it the group's highest-charting Japanese single to that point. TVXQ also collaborated with label-mate Kumi Koda for her thirty-eighth single, "Last Angel", which was used as the theme song for the Japanese release of Resident Evil: Extinction.

2008–present: Commercial success

TVXQ released their sixteenth Japanese single, "Purple Line", on January 16, 2008. It debuted atop the Oricon, becoming the group's first number-one in Japan and making them the first foreign male group to have a number-one single in Japan. They then released their third Japanese album, T, which debuted at #4 on the Oricon Weekly album chart. TVXQ's label Rhythm Zone, announced the "Trick" project where five singles would be released consecutively for six weeks, from February to March and each single would contain a solo track by a member. The group released their twenty-second single, "Beautiful You / Sennen Koi Uta" in April. The single became another number-one for the group and made them the first non-Japanese Asians with two number-one singles since Ou-Yang Fei Fei set the record 24 years before. They returned to Korea to participate in the 14th Annual Dream Concert at the Olympic Stadium in Seoul on June 7. On June 12, TVXQ concluded their Asia Tour in Beijing which had begun on February 23, 2007 in Seoul. TVXQ returned to Japan and released their twenty-third single, "Dōshite Kimi o Suki ni Natte Shimattandarō?" The single topped the chart, making TVXQ the first foreign artists to have three number-one singles on the Oricon. They performed at Avex's 20th anniversary meeting and at A-Nation '08. In August, TVXQ returned to Korea once again to take part in SMTown Live '08. They performed alongside label-mates BoA, Cheon Sang Ji Hee the Grace, Zhang Liyin, Girls' Generation,Shinee and Super Junior.On April 3, 2010, it was announced by Avex that TVXQ will be ceasing all of their Japanese activities for the time being and will focus on helping each member with their solo activities.

It was later announced in early May 2010 that the three members of TVXQ (Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu) will appear as a sub unit in the Thanksgiving Live in Dome concert in Japan. Their group is called J.Y.J representing the first letter of each of their names. The group will be under the company Rhythm Zone Japan.

Shinee (샤이니, stylized as SHINee, pronounced /ˈʃaɪniː/ "shiny") is a contemporary R&B South Korean boy band.[1] Formed by SM Entertainment in 2008, they made their debut on May 25, 2008 on SBS's Popular Songs with their promotional single, "Noonan Neomu Yeppeo (Replay)" ("누난 너무 예뻐 (Replay)", lit. "Older Girl, You're So Pretty (Replay)"). The group consists of Onew, Jonghyun, Key, Minho, and Taemin. Since their debut, Shinee has won numerous awards. They have also starred in their own reality show based on their song, "Noona Neomu Yeppeo (Replay)". Shinee is considered to be a fashion icon having started the "Shinee Trend".


2008: Debut and The Shinee World

In late May 2008 news articles started to surface online about SM Entertainment's new group, Shinee.[1][3] On May 23, the group's first mini-album, Replay was released.[2] Replay debuted at #10 on the Korean music charts and peaked at #8, selling 17,957 copies in the first half of 2008.[4]

On June 7, 2008, Shinee participated in the Dream Concert in the Seoul Olympic Stadium along with other high profile Korean stars such as Epik High, Girls' Generation, Super Junior, TVXQ and the Wonder Girls.[5][6] The group won their first award, Rookie of the Month, at the Cyworld Digital Music Award on June 22, 2008.[7] Shinee took part in SMTown Live '08, which was held on August 18, 2008. They performed alongside labelmates BoA, Zhang Liyin, Cheon Sang Ji Hee the Grace, Girls' Generation, Super Junior and TVXQ.[8] On August 23, 2008, Shinee attended MNet's 20's Choice Awards 2008, where they won the "Hot New Star" award.[9] Shinee released their full debut album, The Shinee World, on August 28, 2008.[10] The album debuted on the charts at #3, selling 30,000 copies.[11]


Shinee performed at SM Town Live in BangkokThe first single released from the album was "Sanso Gateun Neo (Love Like Oxygen)" (산소 같은 너 (Love Like Oxygen), lit. You Are Like Oxygen), a cover of "Show the World" by Martin Hoberg Hedegaard,[12] originally written by the Danish songwriting and production team of Thomas Troelsen, Remee and Lucas Secon.[13] On September 18, 2008, Shinee's "Sanso Gateun Neo (Love Like Oxygen)" was the No. 1 song on M! Countdown.[14] A few days later, Shinee received the "Mutizen" award for the single on SBS's Popular Songs. Shinee participated in the "5th Asia Song Festival", where they received the "Best New Artist" award with Japanese girl group Berryz Kobo.[15]

Shinee attended the 2008 Style Icon Awards on October 30, 2008, where they won the "Best Style Icon Award".[16] On the same day, they released The Shinee World as a repackaged album under the name Amigo. Included on album were three new songs: "Forever or Never", a remix of "Sa. Gye. Han (Love Should Go On)" (사.계.한) and the promotional single "A.Mi.Go (Amigo)" (아.미.고).[17] "A.Mi.Go" is a shortened version of the Korean phrase "Areumdaun Minyeorueljoahamyeon Gosaenghanda" (아름다운 미녀를 좋아하면 고생한다 lit. Heart Aches When You Fall In Love With a Beauty).

On November 15, 2008 Shinee won the "Best Male Rookie" award at the 10th annual MNET KM Music Festival, beating fellow newcomers U-KISS, 2PM, 2AM and Mighty Mouth. At the 23rd Annual Golden Disk Awards, they performed a medley of their songs, "Noona Neomu Yeppeo
Lee Jinki (이진기), better known by his stage name Onew (온유) was born in the city of Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi-do. The leader, one of the vocalists and oldest member in the group, he was discovered at the 2006 S.M. Academy Casting.[38] Onew collaborated with Lee Hyun Ji, former member of project group Banana Girl, for his song "Vanilla Love" and with label-mate, Jessica of Girls' Generation for the song "Il Nyeon Hu (One Year Later)" (Korean: 일년後" (One Year Later)").

Kim Jonghyun (김종현), commonly known as Jonghyun, is the main vocalist in the group.[40] He was born and raised in Seoul. He was discovered at the "2005 S.M. Casting System".[38] Before debuting with Shinee, Jonghyun sang a duet, "Wrongly Given Love" (交错的爱), with Zhang Liyin for her debut Chinese album I Will.[38]
Kim Kibum (김기범), better known by his stage name Key (키), is one of the rappers and vocalists in the group.[38] He was born and raised in Daegu. He was a gifted varsity water-skier at Dae Gu Young Shin Middle School.[41] He was discovered at the "2005 S.M. National Tour Audition Casting".[38] Before debuting with Shinee, Key appeared in Super Junior's Wonder Boy MV as an extra dancer. Key was featured in label-mate Xiah's solo "Xiahtic".[42] In 2010 Key was featured in the song "치유 (Healing)" on label-mates TRAX's first mini album "Trax Mini Album Volume 1".[43] Later, it was also announced that Key would have a small part in Girls' Generation's song "Hwaseongin Virus (Boys & Girls)" (Korean: "화성인 바이러스 (Boys & Girls)") on their second studio album Oh!.

Choi Minho (최민호), commonly known as Minho, is the other rapper in the group. He was born and raised in Incheon. He also directs and writes raps in some of their songs. He was discovered at the 2006 S.M. Casting System.[38] Before debuting with Shinee, Minho modeled for Ha Sang Baek's "Seoul Collection F/W 08-09" in March.[29] He has appeared in Girls' Generation's music video "Gee".[45] Minho is also a permanent cast member in KBS's Dream Team Season 2.

Lee Taemin (이태민), commonly known as Taemin, is the lead dancer of the group.[40] He was born and raised in Seoul. He is the youngest member in group. He was discovered at the "2005 S.M. Open Weekend Audition Casting".[38] Taemin debuted as an actor in the sitcom Taehee-Hyegyo-Jihyun! (Korean: "태희혜교지현이!").lay)", "Sanso Gateun Neo (Love Like Oxygen)" and "A.Mi.Go (Amigo)" and won the award for "YEPP Newcomer Album"

Super Junior (Korean: 슈퍼주니어), often referred to as SJ or SuJu (슈주), is a popular boy group from South Korea.With a total of 13 members, they are one of the largest boy bands in the world.The group consists of Leeteuk (leader), Heechul, Hankyung, Yesung, Kangin, Shindong, Sungmin, Eunhyuk, Donghae, Siwon, Ryeowook, Kibum and Kyuhyun.The only Chinese member, Hankyung, was chosen from three thousand applicants via auditions held in China. the personal activities of Kibum in acting, and Kang-in's leave of absence for mandatory military service.[2] However, the remaining members have insisted that they are still part of the group.Super Junior has released and contributed in 20 different kinds of records with varying degrees of success.[5] Over the years, they have been divided into smaller sub groups, simultaneously targeting different music industries and audiences.
